HS 85287

Import Duty on Televisions in India (2026): 11%–26.4% + IGST

Television reception apparatus under HS 8528.7x is a protected category in India: colour TVs carry combined customs duty in the 22-26.4% band, and TVs are on the restricted list for commercial import without licensing. For individuals, that makes large-panel imports expensive but occasionally still worthwhile for premium OLED sizes.

Before you order

What to know about importing televisions

  • Colour televisions attract 22-26.4% combined duty plus 28% GST-slab IGST on many large screens - confirm the IGST slab for your size before ordering.

  • TV imports above 36 inches are effectively restricted for commercial quantities; single personal units clear with duty.

  • One TV in accompanied baggage is allowed with duty paid at the airport counter - flat baggage rate on the value above the free allowance; airlines have their own size limits.

  • Panels are fragile freight: insist on original packaging and transit insurance for any shipped TV.

Televisions import questions, answered

What is the customs duty on a TV brought into India?+
Colour televisions carry a combined customs duty of 22% to about 26.4% depending on the tariff line, and IGST (18% or 28% depending on screen classification) is charged on the duty-inclusive value. A USD 1,500 OLED can easily attract INR 60,000-80,000 in total taxes.
Can I bring a TV from Dubai in my baggage?+
Yes - one TV is allowed per passenger with duty payable at the red channel: the flat baggage rate of about 38.5% applies on the value above your INR 50,000 allowance. Dubai-to-India TV carriage was once a famous ritual, but Indian panel prices have narrowed the gap for mid-range sizes.
Why are imported TVs restricted in India?+
India put colour TVs on the restricted import list in 2020 to push local assembly. Individuals importing one unit for personal use still clear with duty, but bulk imports need a DGFT licence - so resale-scale TV importing is not practical.
Is it worth importing a high-end OLED?+
Only at the premium end: 77-inch and larger OLED panels sometimes carry 30-40% price gaps versus Indian retail, which survives the tax load. For anything mid-range, local prices plus warranty and installation almost always win.
