Import Duty on Monitors & Projectors in India (2026): 11%–22% + IGST

Computer monitors and projectors under HS 8528.4x-8528.6x sit in a friendlier duty band than televisions: monitors designed for use with computers attract around 11% combined duty, while some other display lines reach 22%. Gaming monitors and 4K projectors are frequent imports because Indian availability lags US launches.

HS-code duty rates for monitors & projectors

The duty column is the combined customs rate (BCD plus AIDC and SWS, all charged on the assessable value); IGST is then applied on the duty-inclusive amount.

Before you order

What to know about importing monitors & projectors

  • Monitors capable of direct connection to a computer carry roughly half the duty of televisions - correct classification saves real money on large displays.

  • 18% IGST applies on the duty-inclusive value.

  • High-refresh gaming monitors and ultrawides often launch in India months late or at large premiums, making imports attractive despite duty.

  • Projectors classify under 8528.62/69; home-cinema models attract the same treatment as monitors, not TVs.

Monitors & Projectors import questions, answered

What duty applies to a computer monitor imported into India?+
Monitors designed for computer use attract about 11% combined customs duty plus 18% IGST - a total tax of roughly 31% on CIF. That is materially cheaper than the TV rate, so make sure your shipment is invoiced and described as a computer monitor, not a television.
Can customs classify my large monitor as a TV?+
It happens with panels that have TV tuners or smart-TV software. Displays without a tuner that connect over DisplayPort/HDMI to a computer stay in the monitor lines. Keep the product page and spec sheet handy - we attach them to the customs entry for borderline sizes.
Are projectors taxed like TVs in India?+
No - projectors fall under their own lines (8528.62/69) at around 11-22% duty depending on type, plus 18% IGST. A USD 1,000 home-cinema projector typically lands with 30-45% total tax over CIF.
Is importing an Apple Studio Display worthwhile?+
US pricing minus Indian premiums can cover the tax load on Apple displays, but weigh freight for a 7 kg-plus double-boxed panel and the lack of local warranty service. For standard office monitors, Indian prices are usually competitive enough to skip importing.
