Import Duty on Jewellery in India (2026): 20%–25% + IGST

Jewellery imports into India split into precious jewellery under HS 7113 (gold, silver, platinum - around 20-25% combined duty) and imitation jewellery under 7117 (about 20-25% as well, with per-kg minimums on some lines). Add 3% IGST for precious pieces and the maths differs sharply from ordinary goods.

What to know about importing jewellery

  • IGST on precious jewellery is 3% (the gold GST slab), not 18% - the total tax profile is duty-heavy, tax-light compared with electronics.

  • Personal baggage allowances for jewellery are separate and gender-specific for returning Indians (20g up to INR 50,000 for men, 40g up to INR 100,000 for women, after six months abroad).

  • Hallmarking rules apply to gold jewellery sold in India; personal imports for own use are outside mandatory hallmarking.

  • Courier imports of precious jewellery need declared-value insurance; we ship via specialised secure channels above INR 2 lakh.

Jewellery import questions, answered

What is the import duty on gold jewellery brought into India?+
Gold jewellery under 7113 attracts roughly 20-25% combined customs duty plus 3% IGST. Returning residents get a small duty-free jewellery allowance (20g/INR 50,000 for men, 40g/INR 100,000 for women after six months abroad); beyond that, duty applies on the full value at the applicable baggage or tariff rate.
Is Dubai gold still cheaper after Indian customs duty?+
Dubai's making charges and pricing are lower, but once you add 20%+ duty the arbitrage largely disappears for pieces above the free allowance. Dubai purchases make sense within the allowance, for designs unavailable in India, or when travelling anyway - not as a bulk savings strategy.
How is imitation jewellery taxed differently?+
Imitation jewellery under 7117 attracts a similar 20-25% duty band but standard 18% IGST (not the 3% precious rate), and some lines carry per-kilogram minimum duties that punish very cheap bulk hauls. A small Pandora or Swarovski order clears as normal courier goods.
Can I ship branded jewellery like Cartier or Tiffany to India?+
Yes, fully legally with duty paid - we use insured, signature-required secure shipping for high-value pieces. Keep the boutique invoice: customs values luxury jewellery from brand price lists when documentation is missing, which rarely works in your favour.
