What to expect during customs clearance

What is customs clearance?

Every international shipment passes through customs at the destination country. Customs authorities inspect imported goods, verify documentation, and collect applicable duties and taxes. This is a legal requirement, not something that can be skipped.

What we handle

iWishBag prepares all customs documentation on your behalf:

  • Commercial invoice with accurate item descriptions and declared values
  • Packing list with weights and quantities
  • Harmonized System (HS) codes for product classification
  • Any required import permits or certificates

We always declare the true value of goods. Under-declaration is illegal and puts your shipment at risk of seizure and penalties.

How long does it take?

Most shipments clear customs within 1-3 business days. However, some factors can cause delays:

  • Random inspection -- Customs may physically open and inspect packages. This adds 1-3 days.
  • Missing or unclear documentation -- Rare with our shipments, but can happen. We resolve these quickly.
  • Restricted product categories -- Electronics, cosmetics, and supplements may face additional scrutiny.
  • High-value shipments -- Items above certain thresholds may require additional review.

What if my package is held?

If your package is held at customs for more than 5 business days, contact us. We will investigate with the customs broker and the carrier, and keep you updated on resolution.

Duty payment

Customs duty is either:

  • Pre-paid -- Included in your quote and paid before shipping. Nothing extra to pay on delivery.
  • Collect on delivery -- In some routes, duty is paid at the time of delivery or customs clearance. We estimate this amount in your quote so you know what to expect.
