What to know about importing watches

  • Uniform 22% duty across mechanical, quartz, precious-metal and steel watches - no classification games to play.

  • IGST of 18% applies on the duty-inclusive value; total tax about 44% over CIF.

  • A watch worn on your wrist is a personal effect; boxed watches with papers in baggage above INR 50,000 are chargeable and frequently checked on Dubai/Singapore routes.

  • For insured shipping of luxury pieces we use declared-value coverage and signature delivery; never ship a watch understating its value - undervaluation risks seizure, not just penalty duty.

Watches import questions, answered

What is the customs duty on a watch imported into India?+
A flat 22% combined customs duty applies to virtually all wristwatches, plus 18% IGST on the duty-inclusive value - about 44% total tax over the CIF price. The rate is identical for a INR 10,000 Seiko and a INR 10 lakh Rolex; only the absolute amounts differ.
Can I wear a new luxury watch through Indian customs?+
One watch on your wrist is a personal effect by convention. Carrying the box, papers and warranty card in the same bag undermines the personal-effect story, and above the INR 50,000 allowance customs can charge the baggage rate on a new piece. Frequent flyers with multiple watches attract scrutiny.
Why do people import JDM Seiko and G-Shock models?+
Japan-domestic-market models - Grand Seiko dial variants, G-Shock collaborations - are simply not distributed in India. Even after 44% tax, a JDM Seiko from Japan often costs less than boutique-grade alternatives locally, and the exclusivity is the point.
Is grey-market import of Swiss watches legal?+
Importing a genuine watch for personal use with full duty paid is entirely legal - grey market only means outside authorised distribution, which affects warranty (serviced by independent watchmakers or the brand at a charge), not legality. Undervaluing the invoice is the illegal part; we never do it.
