HS 8806

Import Duty on Drones in India (2026): 11% + IGST

Unmanned aircraft under HS heading 8806 carry a uniform 11% combined customs duty in India - but duty is the least of your worries. India banned the import of fully built consumer drones in February 2022 to protect domestic manufacturing, so a DJI in a courier box is a seizure risk, not a duty question.

HS-code duty rates for drones

The duty column is the combined customs rate (BCD plus AIDC and SWS, all charged on the assessable value); IGST is then applied on the duty-inclusive amount.

What INR 90,000 of drones costs to land in India

Step by step, using the representative rate for this category (11% duty on HS 88061000, 18% IGST). Your exact rate depends on the precise HS code in the table above.

Drones (goods value)
INR 90,000
International freight (illustrative, 10% of goods)
INR 9,000
Assessable value (CIF = goods + freight)
INR 99,000
Customs duty (11% of CIF, HS 88061000)
INR 10,890
IGST (18% of CIF + duty)
INR 19,780
Estimated landed cost
INR 1,29,670

Note for businesses: the IGST portion (INR 19,780 here) is creditable as input tax credit if you are GST-registered; the customs duty portion is not. Freight is illustrative - use the calculator for a quote with real shipping on your actual item.

What to know about importing drones

  • Import of complete drones (CBU) is prohibited for consumers since the Drone Rules import policy of Feb 2022; exceptions exist for R&D, defence and security with DGFT clearance.

  • Drone components and parts remain freely importable - the domestic industry builds on imported parts.

  • Operating any drone in India above nano class (250g) requires registration on the DigitalSky platform and a UIN.

  • Carrying a drone in personal baggage is also stopped at customs - travellers regularly have DJI units detained at Indian airports.

Drones import questions, answered

Can I import a DJI drone into India?+
No - fully built drones are on India's prohibited import list since February 2022, regardless of duty paid. Courier shipments of complete drones are detained by customs, and the exemption route (DGFT import authorisation) is realistically available only to enterprises, R&D bodies and government users.
What about carrying a drone in my luggage from abroad?+
Same prohibition applies - airport customs regularly detains drones found in passenger baggage, and getting a detained unit released is slow and often unsuccessful. Do not plan a holiday purchase around bringing a drone home.
Are drone parts and FPV components legal to import?+
Yes - the ban targets complete units; parts, frames, motors, flight controllers and cameras import normally at 11% duty plus IGST. India's FPV community builds almost entirely on imported components for this reason.
What are the rules for flying a drone I already own in India?+
Anything above 250g must be registered on DigitalSky with a UIN, flown by the rules of the Drone Rules 2021 (zones, altitude caps), and drones above 2kg need certification. Nano drones under 250g are the only near-paperwork-free class.
