Understanding customs duty

What is customs duty?

Customs duty is a tax charged by the destination country's government on imported goods. It is calculated based on the product type, declared value, and country of origin.

Is it included in my quote?

We estimate customs duty in your quote based on the product category and value. If duties are estimated (not exact), we highlight that before you pay. Any difference between estimated and actual duty is settled on your invoice after clearance.

How is it calculated?

  • Each country has its own tariff schedule with rates per product category.
  • Rates typically range from 0% to 30% of the declared value.
  • Some items (electronics, books) may have lower or zero duty in certain countries.
  • VAT/GST is applied on top of the duty in most countries.

Can I reduce duty?

Customs duty is set by law and cannot be avoided. We always declare the true value of goods. Under-declaration is illegal and puts your shipment at risk of seizure.
