Group Buying: How to Import for Less by Pooling Your Order

When enough shoppers want the same product, we place one bulk order — and the shipping and customs that make importing expensive get split across everyone.

Importing a single item is expensive for one stubborn reason: you pay for a whole shipment's freight and customs handling by yourself. Group buying fixes that. When enough shoppers want the same product, iWishBag places one bulk order — and that shared cost is split across everyone.

This guide explains how a group-buy pool works, why it is cheaper, and when it is the right choice.

Why importing one item costs so much

When you import a single product, three costs go into the price you pay:

  1. The product — what the retailer charges.
  2. International freight — moving the parcel from the origin country to you.
  3. Customs and handling — duty, tax, and the paperwork to clear it.

The product price is fixed. But freight and customs handling barely change whether a shipment carries one unit or fifty — so on a single unit, you carry all of that cost alone. That is why importing one phone case can cost almost as much as importing a box of them.

What a group-buy pool is

A pool is a group of shoppers who all want the same product. Instead of importing one unit at a time, iWishBag waits until enough people join, then places a single bulk order and ships one consolidated shipment. Everyone in the pool gets the same product at a lower per-unit price.

The product still costs the same. The saving comes entirely from sharing one shipment's freight and customs across the whole group.

A worked example

Take a typical imported skincare set.

The product line never moves. Both shipping lines drop sharply once the cost is shared — and that is the whole saving. The busier the pool, the thinner each share becomes.

How a pool works, step by step

  1. Join with a small deposit. Reserve your unit with a refundable token deposit — a fraction of the full price. It holds your spot while the pool fills.
  2. The pool fills. Other shoppers join. Many pools use a tiered price ladder, so as the pool passes set milestones the per-unit price steps down for everyone.
  3. You pay the balance. Once the pool reaches its goal, we confirm supplier stock and open a payment window. You pay the rest — the full delivered-to-door price minus your deposit.
  4. One shipment, delivered to you. We place a single consolidated order, then split it on arrival and deliver each unit individually, the same doorstep delivery as any other iWishBag order.

There are exactly two payments: the deposit to join, and the balance when the pool fills. Customs and duties are already inside the price — nothing extra is collected when your order lands.

What if the pool doesn't fill?

If not enough shoppers join, the pool simply does not go ahead — and every deposit is refunded in full to the original payment method. iWishBag absorbs any payment-gateway fees, because a pool that did not fill is not your fault. You are never left out of pocket.

While a pool is still filling you can also opt out at any time and get your deposit back in full. Once the goal is reached and the balance window opens, your spot is committed.

When pooling is the right choice — and when it isn't

Pooling is a good fit when:

  • The item is offered as a pool and you are happy to wait for it to fill.
  • You want the lowest landed price and timing is flexible.

A regular quote request is the better choice when:

  • You need a specific item on your own timeline.
  • You need it fast — a pool only ships once it fills.

Common questions

Is my money safe? Every pool is created and run by iWishBag, not by other shoppers. Your deposit is held against your unit and refunded in full if the pool does not fill.

Can I join more than one pool? Yes — each pool is independent, with its own deposit, fill progress, and balance window.

How do I track a pool? Open My Pools in your account. Each pool shows its status, how full it is, and the current price tier, and we notify you whenever it changes state.
