You can pay iWishBag from the Maldives today with international Visa/Mastercard, PayPal, or Airwallex. Local Maldivian rails (BML transfer, Dhiraagu Pay, m-Faisaa) are on the roadmap and rolling out as bank integrations land.

What works today

  • International cards — Visa, Mastercard, American Express. Charged in USD by default; statement shows your local conversion to MVR. Works through Stripe processing
  • PayPal — pay in USD or your linked currency. Useful if you have a PayPal balance from elsewhere
  • Airwallex — multi-currency processor; charges in USD or USD-equivalent. The default rail for shoppers without American Express
  • Bank wire (USD) — for high-value orders, you can settle via direct USD wire to our Singapore account. Email us before to coordinate

For most shoppers, international card or PayPal handles everything. Both clear instantly so we start procurement the same day.

Currency and FX

Quotes are denominated in USD by default. The reasons:

  • Customs duty (MIRA) is calculated against USD-CIF values
  • Most foreign-card transactions clear in USD anyway
  • USD pricing avoids the daily MVR fluctuation that would otherwise make quotes go stale

Your card statement will show MVR (or your home currency) using your bank's conversion rate. We don't take an FX margin on top — what you pay us is the USD amount, what your bank charges is between you and them.

If your card has a high FX fee, PayPal's rate is often better. Worth checking before checkout.

What's coming

We're working on direct local rails for Maldivian shoppers. Roadmap:

  • BML bank transfer (MVR) — pay from your BML account; we settle in USD on our end, you avoid card FX fees
  • Dhiraagu Pay (MVR) — mobile wallet integration
  • m-Faisaa (MVR) — mobile wallet integration
  • MIB and BoC integrations — direct bank transfer support beyond BML

These will let you pay in MVR with no FX overhead. We'll publish the launch dates as each integration goes live; subscribe to our updates for the announcement.

Common questions

Can I pay in MVR today? Not directly. International cards and PayPal handle conversion in the background. Direct MVR payment is on the roadmap (BML, Dhiraagu Pay, m-Faisaa).

Why is the quote in USD? USD is the customs reference currency in the Maldives and avoids quote staleness from MVR fluctuation. You pay your card issuer in MVR (or your home currency); they convert.

What's the FX cost? We don't add FX margin. Your bank's rate applies. PayPal's rate is sometimes better than card-issuer rates — worth checking.

Are payments secure? Stripe and PayPal are PCI-DSS compliant. Card details never touch our servers. Bank wires are direct from your bank to ours.

What if my card is declined? Common with foreign cards on first transaction. Usually resolves with your card issuer's online portal (look for "approve foreign transaction"). PayPal is the simplest fallback.

Refunds — how do they work? Refunds go back to the original payment method. Cards take 5–10 business days; PayPal is usually instant.
