The short version: when goods arrive in Maldives, customs duty plus 8% GST get applied based on the imported value. We pre-calculate both in your quote so the price you see is the price you pay — no surprise duty bill at delivery.

This is the practical primer if you want to understand the math behind the quote.

Who collects and what

Two agencies share customs in the Maldives:

  • Maldives Customs Service — collects import duty (the percentage on the product itself)
  • MIRA (Maldives Inland Revenue Authority) — collects 8% GST on top of the duty-inclusive value

For most shoppers, both feel like one charge. We handle the paperwork and pay both on your behalf.

The duty formula

The math runs in two steps:

  1. CIF value = Product cost + insurance + freight to Maldives. Customs uses this number, not just the product price
  2. Duty = CIF value × duty rate (varies by HS code / product category)
  3. GST = (CIF value + duty) × 8%
  4. Total customs charge = duty + GST

So GST is calculated on the duty-inclusive value, not just the product. This compounding is why duty math always looks higher than people first expect.

A quick example. Say a phone costs $400 with $50 freight and $5 insurance.

  • CIF = $455
  • Duty (15% for phones) = $68.25
  • GST = ($455 + $68.25) × 8% = $41.86
  • Total charge = $110.11 (~24% of CIF)

The real working number is "20–25% on top of CIF" for most consumer goods. We bake all of this into your quote upfront.

Common category rates

Approximate rates based on HS code groups (always confirm specifics in your quote):

Cosmetics and fragrance pay the highest effective rate among consumer categories. That's worth knowing before placing a big beauty order.

Exemptions and thresholds

A few categories get special treatment:

  • Books and educational materials — 0% duty, 8% GST only
  • Personal effects (used items moving with you) — usually duty-free with proper documentation
  • Goods for re-export — duty-exempt with the right paperwork (rare for personal shoppers)
  • Personal-use small parcels — no general "de minimis" exemption like the US has. Maldives charges from low values upward
  • Restricted goods — alcohol, tobacco, religious materials have separate rules and require explicit clearance

If you're moving to Maldives or shipping personal effects, ask us about the personal-effects exemption — paperwork is needed, but it's usually duty-free if filed correctly.

Common questions

Will I owe extra duty on delivery? No. We pre-pay duty and GST on your behalf and bake it into your quote. The price you pay is what you pay.

What if customs disagrees with our duty calculation? Rare, but it happens for ambiguously-classified goods. We cover the difference up to a tolerance. For larger discrepancies, we let you decide before clearance — refund and return, or pay the extra.

Why is GST 8% in the Maldives but lower elsewhere? GST in Maldives is country-specific. It's been 6% historically; current rate is 8% as of 2026.

Can I claim duty back if I return the item? For commercial imports, yes (with paperwork). For personal-use returns, customs duty is usually non-refundable once paid.

Do small low-value parcels really get charged? Often yes. Maldives doesn't have a generous low-value exemption. Even small purchases (around $50–100) attract duty.

Where do I see the duty in my quote? Itemized in the quote breakdown — product cost, freight, our service fee, duty, GST. Nothing hidden.
