Most advice about importing to Nepal is guesswork. This report is not: it draws on paid, customs-calculated orders delivered through iWishBag between December 2024 and June 2026. Figures are published as shares and ratios — we do not disclose order volumes or revenue. Journalists and researchers are welcome to cite any figure with attribution and a link.
Nepal levies duty by HS-code category, so the rate depends on what's in the basket:
| Category | Typical all-in rate (duty + VAT) |
|---|---|
| Books, many small accessories | Low end of the schedule |
| Phones and electronics | ~13-18% |
| Clothing and fashion | ~25-35% |
| Cosmetics and fragrance | 40%+ |
The high rates people quote are real — but they apply to specific categories, not to everything. In our paid-order data, everyday baskets skew heavily toward lower-duty categories, while the headline-grabbing high-duty items (gold, vehicles, large appliances) barely appear in real shopping baskets. That's why the duty on a typical order is far less frightening than the worst-case rate suggests — and why we pre-calculate the exact duty per item in every quote before you pay.
| Origin | Shipping as % of goods value | Average parcel weight |
|---|---|---|
| China | ~15% | ~4 kg |
| India | ~17% | ~1.5 kg |
| UK | ~21% | ~1.4 kg |
| USA | ~24% | ~1.7 kg |
China's ratio is the lowest despite the longest distance because Chinese orders are consolidated: shoppers combine AliExpress, Taobao, and 1688 purchases into one ~4 kg parcel, so the fixed costs spread across more goods. The USA is the most expensive lane relative to goods value — worth knowing before paying US prices for something an Indian marketplace also stocks.
Top sources by share of paid items, last 18 months:
| Rank | Store |
|---|---|
| 1 | Amazon India — the largest single source, more than the next four combined |
| 2 | Amazon US |
| 3 | Flipkart |
| 4 | Myntra |
| 5 | AliExpress |
| 6 | Alibaba / 1688 |
The long tail matters too: Zara, trading-card shops, and dozens of single-store orders that no marketplace in Nepal stocks.
Figures aggregate paid iWishBag orders only — quote requests that never converted are excluded. Shipping ratios divide international freight by the goods subtotal per order, averaged across orders with a positive subtotal. Store rankings parse the ordered product's URL domain. The window is December 2024 to June 2026. Duty rate ranges reference Nepal's published tariff schedule by category. All figures are published as shares, ratios, and rankings; absolute order counts, item counts, and order values are intentionally not disclosed. No customer-level data is used or shared.
